Interest Check for Appreciation Event of The Sandman’s Black Characters

Hello! A few of us are trying to put together a fandom appreciation event for the Black characters of The Sandman. It would most likely run for about two weeks. We’re planning on making it a very broad sort of appreciation event, so as to include as many people as possible. So, participation is not limited to just fics and art (although those are extremely welcome!!). Participation can look like metas, headcanons, even memes—anything that centres around this beautiful cast of characters we’re so lucky to see on our screens.

We currently do not have any Black fans on our organisation team, but it’s important to us that we change that! If you’re Black and interested in helping run this event, please feel free to reach out to @tryan-a-bex or @wordsinhaled.

it should be illegal to tow a car as punishment and i’m not even kidding

twocarsonenight

you park in the wrong spot somewhere. maybe at a friend’s apartment complex, or at a store when you’re actually walking somewhere else, or whatever. they could ticket you—still charge you a fine for parking where you’re not supposed to. but instead, in a far more crippling way than a fine (which is already hard enough for low income people), they call a third party and steal your car. so you have lost your means of transportation, which you will only learn the next time you need your car, because they don’t have any need or care to notify you.

so first, you have to figure out which towing company they used. which you can only do if the place that decided your car was in the wrong spot is still open, or if you can get someone on the phone.

assuming you figure out which company towed your car, which one time took me over an hour on its own because the number on the signs warning about towing in the parking lot was a dead number, you then have to figure out how to get there. without a car. god help you if you don’t have someone in your support network to pick you up or public transportation, because most of the time it’s at least a mile away.

you find a way to get there, you call them to see if your car is even really there, and they tell you they won’t give your car back until you pay them. how much? well, it’s not regulated, so they can pretty much say whatever number they goddamn feel like. i recently got towed by a company infamous in my college town and they charged me a whopping $180–half of my paycheck for two weeks during the school year. when the same company towed my brother last year, and we both have the same sized cars, they charged him $300. they don’t have to justify the charge, they don’t have any itemized receipt, because what are you going to do? not pay it? you have to get to work and you’re already short on time because you had to walk to the goddamn towing place or have someone come get you to bring you there or spend an hour on the phone with different people trying to figure out where the fuck your car was in the first place.

it’s extortionate. it’s absolutely insane that they can, without exaggeration, steal someone’s car and hold it for ransom under the assumption that you will pay anything to get it back, because of the extent to which our society is dependent on cars.

STOP MAKING ME FEEL OLD

datasoong47

Okay, but this is genuinely adorable. I love how the first kid, after entering the number, was like “what do I do now?”. I bet the kid was trying to figure out where the “call” button was, because if you’re only used to cell phones, it’s not really intuitive that the call will automatically go through once you finish entering the phone number

These days, the concept of a dial tone is rather obsolete for a cellphone-centric world, so it isn't a surprise these girls are young enough to be unfamiliar with it or the hookswitch. Only place you see traditional telephones are in office buildings and older homes that still use it.

When dial service was introduced, the Bell System had to put together instructional films to educate telephone users. So many people were used to being able to pick up and tell the operator who to call for them, so you had to suddenly learn where to find phone numbers. They didn't even have pushbuttons telephones yet, just rotary dial.

emergency abortion for a Black abuse survivor!!!

image

Hi, my name is Fern. I live in a state where abortion is illegal this is seriously a last resort for me so please share if you can't donate. my friend suggested twitter and tumblr since he's seen other people raise funds here.

Last week I made the difficult decision to leave an abusive relationship. I stayed longer than I should because of finances, but now I'm stuck with an unwanted pregnancy. I'm still in school and financially unable to support a child. I asked my parents for help but they are apposed to abortion and are recommending I carry to term but I'm not ready for that. I'm panicking and scared.

I really need help, mostly for getting to and from the nearest location that I can get a surgical abortion done, as it's already too late for me to try the pill method. I tried to do the pill method last week but I didn't make the appointment. At 10 weeks now I'm forced to have a surgical abortion and the nearest location is 4 and a half hours away.

I need help getting there and back since I don't have a reliable vehicle so I might need to pay a friend to drive me. I also need to pay for some of the cost of the abortion, which is around 700.

I will also be using the donations to get this procedure done, and paying for mscellaneous stuff like the gas money, drinks and food for the drive, an oil change probably, and post surgery healing items such as a heating pad, midol, comfort items, pads..

Thank you for taking the time to read this, this is incredibly urgent so please share if you can't donate.

note: I'll also do art commissions (you can check out my style at my insta) but be warned it might take a little while since I'm dealing with this.

twitter is going to be shut down. half of reddit is locked or completely unmoderated. the entire first page of google search results are ads. tumblr does not and will never have a functioning search system and their content moderation is 100% automated. youtube only shares ad revenue with people who make snuff films for Youtube Kids. facebook is selling your grandma’s social security number under the table for like $5. web 2.0 is completely dead right
